Officials seek rape witnesses

first_imgPALMDALE – Detectives investigating the Aug. 29 rape of a 10-year-old girl who was dragged by a middle-aged man into an empty theater at the Antelope Valley Mall want to talk to every person who was inside the mall in the hours before and after the crime was committed. Detectives asked anyone who was in the mall between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Aug. 29 to call them. “They may not know that they saw something. That’s up to our investigators to get that information out,” Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Daniel Scott said. People who were in the mall at that time are asked to call the Special Victims Bureau tip line at (866) 247-5877 and leave information on how detectives can contact them. The Palmdale City Council last week authorized a $10,000 reward, suggested by Councilman Steve Hofbauer. Los Angeles County supervisors also authorized a $10,000 reward. At the mall, Hofbauer and other community members passed out Sheriff’s Department fliers bearing an artist’s sketch of the rapist. The girl was in a Cinemark Movies 10 hallway about 1:30 p.m. Aug. 29 when a man accosted her, forcing her into an empty theater and verbally threatening her, deputies said. The rapist assaulted the girl behind the movie screen, then fled out a back door and left her in the theater. The artist’s sketch depicts a middle-age African-American man with short black hair and a graying mustache. Detectives described the assailant as 35 to 45 years old, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighing about 180 pounds. They said he wore a white T-shirt with an unknown logo and dark blue warm-up pants with white stripes down the legs.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Career academies receive grants

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORECalifornia’s bungled $1 billion accounting system State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell said the academies are an important part of his plan to reform high schools. The specialized schools “increase rigor in the curriculum, prepare students for careers in the real world and increase graduation rates.” “In the next legislative session, I will continue to fight for more funding and expansion of this vital program,” O’Connell said. Academies combine core high school classes with career training, using a specific team of teachers. Each year, a new set of students joins the academy and takes courses together until graduation. Internships and mentors are also components. These smaller “learning communities,” O’Connell says, end up personalizing students’ education and also promote strong relationships between students and teachers. As a result, graduation rates rise and students leave high school with enough job training to get a boost into college or the work force. WHITTIER – More than $800,000 in grants has been awarded to six Whittier-area schools that have California Partnership Academies. The academies are like schools within schools. They prepare students for careers ranging from nursing to architecture as the youngsters work toward their high school diplomas. The bulk of the money – $450,900 – is going to the Whittier Union High School District, which received grants ranging from $58,500 to $81,000 for six career academies at California, Santa Fe and Whittier high schools. A business academy at Santa Fe High School received an $81,000 grant, as did the Cardinal Computer Academy at Whittier High. Other local recipients included Glenn High School in Norwalk, where two academies specializing in transportation and education careers received the state funding; La Mirada High, for its entrepreneurship and education academies; and Norwalk High for its medical services career path academy. At California High, which has five career academies, officials received $288,900 in funding for four of them – business, health, architecture/engineering and Hospitality House, a culinary and hotel management academy. “It’s a whole different aspect of learning that other schools don’t have,” said California High Assistant Principal Ben Murillo. “The fact that we have five here on campus just means there are more opportunities for kids.” Jessica Soto, a senior enrolled in Cal High’s health academy, already has earned her license as a certified nurse assistant. She plans to go to college to become a nurse. “I do love it,” Soto, 17, said. “It’s not easy, but I think it’s worth it. Right now there are so many jobs in this field. I don’t think anyone ever leaves here without a job.” tracy.garcia@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3051160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Driver foils carjack attempt

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MORESurfer attacked by shark near Channel Islands calls rescue a ‘Christmas miracle’The victim, 25-year-old Artis Rivera of San Gabriel, said he was driving in his Lexus with his girlfriend near Rosemead Boulevard and Gallatin Road in Pico Rivera at about 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 when he noticed a car driving too close to his in the next lane. He also became alarmed when he noticed several men inside the car staring at him. When a passenger in the other car threw a cup of liquid at his windshield, Rivera said he turned off Rosemead onto Isora Avenue. He said he then made a series of turns, but the other car sped around to the front of his, blocking Rivera on Acacia Avenue at Gallatin Road. When Rivera tried to put his car in reverse, he said, he realized that another car was blocking him in from behind. A man got out of the car in front and pointed a gun at him, Rivera said. Then several men yelled for him to get out of the car. As one man approached, Rivera said he instinctively stepped on the gas and drove toward a gap between the cars. PICO RIVERA – A Pico Rivera man is facing charges stemming from a “military-style ambush” and attempted car-jacking, sheriff’s investigators said. Deputies arrested Jose Martin Salcedo, 20, on Monday. He was charged Wednesday with two felony counts of false imprisonment. Investigators from the Sheriff’s Department’s anti-gang unit allege Salcedo was among a group of known gang members who lured the victim into their turf, then used their cars to corner the victim’s vehicle from in front and behind. “It was a standard, military-style ambush,” said Detective Noel Furniss. “They started following me, but I was going about 100 mph on Rosemead Boulevard,” said Rivera. “I was thinking if I got out of my car, I was going to get shot, robbed, or hurt.” Rivera eventually stopped and called 9-1-1, providing a license plate number from the car that blocked him in front. Salcedo admitted to detectives to being at the scene, but said the incident stemmed from an argument with Rivera because Rivera had cut him off, according to Furniss. Salcedo denied pointing a gun at Rivera and trapping him with his car, according to Furniss. sandy.mazza@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3026160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Deontay Wilder watches Kolasinac video and jokes he can work with ‘the tank’

We don’t know what his technique is like, but his footwork… he’s pretty mobile.“We’re going to have to work on him and make sure he doesn’t load up before, because he’s very predictable and that makes him very vulnerable.”“He’s got quick feet, we can work with that,” added the American, laughing.Deontay Wilder on talkSPORT: Listen to the full interview hereKolasinac’s brave reaction to the shocking incident has led for calls for the Bosnian to be made the new Arsenal captain.Gooner-loving broadcaster Piers Morgan tweeted: “On the basis of how he saved Ozil from knife-wielding thugs today, I would make Kolašinac captain of Arsenal with immediate effect.”Former Crystal Palace and QPR manager Ian Holloway, meanwhile, revealed to talkSPORT he once signed a player – believed to be Marcel Seip – after watching him put down four blokes while defending his team-mate.“It turned out he had a club where he came from where people used to go and drink and he ran the door himself,” he said. “He liked to fight and, wow, I’ve never seen such an impressive thing.“I was looking for a centre-half who could do some damage and, for me, he did it in the right way on the pitch.” 2 2 It looks like Sead Kolasinac has a career in boxing if things don’t work out for him at Arsenal, according to Deontay Wilder. The WBC heavyweight champion visited talkSPORT and was shown footage of the Arsenal defender fighting off knife-wielding carjackers as he and Mesut Ozil drove through north London. @smhjaames on Twitter center_img Wilder was at the talkSPORT studio and watched footage of Sead Kolasinac having a go back at carjackers Someone tried to jump Mesut Ozil in his car… Kolasinac jumped out to fight the thief and scared him off As for Kolasinac, he posted a picture of himself on Friday afternoon alongside Mesut Ozil, writing: ‘Think we’re fine.”A Met Police spokesman said of the incident: “It was reported that suspects on motorbikes had attempted to rob a man who was driving a car.“The driver, along with his passenger, managed to get away unharmed and travelled to a restaurant in Golders Green, where they were spoken to by officers.”No arrests have yet been made.last_img read more

Canning surprised Ross County players escaped punishment

first_imgCanning stressed it was the three points that mattered most and the late drama unfortunately deflected away from the victory.“The win was the most important thing for us,” he said. “Our performance wasn’t as high as it’s been in previous games but the result was the most important thing. Taking three points was huge.” Martin Canning was surprised no Ross County players were charged by the Scottish FA following the injury-time brawl at New Douglas Park on Saturday.Drama unfolded in the closing stages of Hamilton Accies’ 3-2 win after Georgios Sarris fouled Davis Keillor-Dunn near the dugouts and County’s Kenny van der Weg clashed with Giannis Skondras in response.Skondras has been hit with excessive misconduct but while both clubs were also charged none of Owen Coyle’s men face individual repercussions.Canning was reluctant to discuss the incident but stood by his post-match comments when he said it was nothing more than “handbags”. He said on Wednesday: “I’ve not had a chance to properly digest it yet because of our under-20s game in the afternoon yesterday so until I speak about it with the owners and the chairman I won’t comment much further.”When asked if the lack of SFA’s charges for the opposition players surprised him, the manager said: “It has because when you watch it back the initial thing started with Van der Weg pushing our player Giannis… but his reaction after that is probably a little excessive.“I think it’s a scuffle. Given the importance of the game, the fact it’s an 89th minute goal and a result that meant so much to both teams… It’s boiled over a minute and a half after that and the players coming together was a bit of handbags. “It’s just one of those things that happen in football that you don’t particularly like to see but it can happen in a passionate sport.”last_img read more

‘It’s not the end of the world if school doesn’t work out – go for Youthreach!’

first_imgA young Donegal woman is looking forward to a career full of opportunities after using Youthreach as a stepping stone to University. Youthreach is one of the many Further Education and Training (FET) programmes offered by Donegal ETB’s FET Service.Carmel Doherty (25) from Desertegney, Buncrana left school at the age of 14. She went through a difficult time at a young age and was unsure what path to take next.“I wanted to go back to education, but you can’t just leave and go back to school. That’s when I found out about Youthreach,” Carmel told Donegal Daily. Youthreach is a free education, training and work experience programme for young people aged 16-20 years who have left school early. It provides people with the qualifications and life skills to progress to employment or other further education. There are six centres across Donegal in Ballyshannon, Buncrana, Glengad, Gortahork, Letterkenny and Lifford, managed by Donegal ETB.Carmel loved her three years in the Buncrana-based programme.“I’m so grateful that it was there for me. Looking back now, I don’t know what else I would have done,” she said.Carmel Doherty – former Buncrana Youthreach LearnerCarmel described Youthreach learning as similar to school in ways, but more varied and task-based. “You still have to work,” she said. “You just put the head down and do it.”“There is a much smaller group than school classes. Everybody knows each other better and you can build a better relationship with the teachers. It really helped me come out of my shell,” Carmel said.Video: Music Lessons at Buncrana and Glengad YouthreachWork experience is also an important part of the Youthreach programme. Other qualifications include basic food hygiene, ECDL, First Aid and Gaisce Awards.Carmel explored many aspects of the world of work through placements at Fort Dunree Military Museum, a local playschool, a national school, a hairdressers and a bookshop. “We did placements every Wednesday and in summer blocks. This gave me plenty of time to try out many jobs and get a feel for what I wanted to do,” she said.Carmel completed Youthreach at 17 years of age and moved on to college a year ahead of her peers in post-primary school. She is a talented artist, so she decided to pursue her passion by doing an Art Diploma in North West Regional College Derry. Her QQI (formerly FETAC), Level 3 and 4 qualifications from Youthreach were sufficient to secure her place on the diploma. She followed this up with a BTEC Higher National Diploma in Fashion & Textiles. After four years in Derry, Carmel decided to follow a different direction.“I was going to finish my degree in England, but I felt a need to do something more life-changing. I wanted to work in a career that would help people. “I took a year out and was advised to do an Access course in Derry. That was when I got a taster of Psychology. I applied to Ulster University and got in last September.“I’m in my second year in Coleraine now and really enjoying it. Psychology is a very interesting subject,” she said.Carmel is looking forward to exploring the many career opportunities her degree will present when she finishes the course, perhaps even combining her skills in art and psychology.Carmel was invited back to the Buncrana Youthreach Centre recently to share her success story. She said: “I told the learners how Youthreach was a good platform for me to get into college. Everybody has different routes in life. If school doesn’t work out it’s not the end of the world.”For any young school leaver looking to get back into education, Carmel’s advice is to go for it:“I loved my time at Youthreach. As long as you make use of all the opportunities that are there for you, I would say 100% do it.”Donegal’s six Youthreach centre are now enrolling for the new term. Van Kesteren was a team player, in Ottawa and at home

first_imgDave Van Kesteren had friends on all sides of the House of Commons. He was respected even by people who wouldn’t vote for him. He won high praise from his political boss. Most of all, he earned the respect of voters in Chatham-Kent––Leamington.With the election over, Mr. Van Kesteren has ended his successful career as MP, handing the torch to fellow Conservative Dave Epp.In April, our MP’s private member’s bill received unanimous support in the House of Commons to have May 5 designated Dutch Heritage Day in Canada.Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer in a video tribute, as written in the Blenheim News Tribune, stated: “Your constituents will never forget your care, your compassion. You truly were a great advocate for them and what they don’t realize is it was because of the advocacy that attracted billions of dollars in federal funds to this riding.”And, in the Chatham Daily News on Jan. 11, letter writer Geoff Hall of Morpeth wrote, “I could never bring myself to vote for the party he represents but would have been happy to vote for the man.”Mr. Van Kesteren never forgot his riding residents, the people who sent him to Ottawa to get our message out.He listened to them, meeting regularly in restaurants around the riding. His popular passport clinics, held at various locations, helped thousands of residents. Mr. Van Kesteren was there to pitch in if he wasn’t in Ottawa. His wife Faye also worked the clinics.Mr. Van Kesteren would offer sincere greetings when meeting with members of the public. He seemed to enjoy talking to them, even though there were likely times that were not always pleasant, when dealing with a cranky (maybe for good reason) constituent.Mr. Van Kesteren was a team player, whether in Ottawa or at home, helping Mr. Epp in his bid to win the election. He is quoted in the Chatham Daily News when he announced his retirement that he wants to make sure the riding’s next representative is “up to speed” on the files on which he has been working. In speaking to Mr. Van Kesteren and his wife, Faye, on election night, Mr. Epp said, “what a great example you have set. It is truly an honour for me to follow you and what you have accomplished since first being elected in 2006.”For the riding’s residents, Mr. Van Kesteren and his wife, Faye, have left us knowing we were well represented in Ottawa and at home and he’s wished a long retirement with his family. At this week’s election gathering, Mr. Van Kesteren said he has had some regrets but called his last 13 years “very rewarding”.He also said, “I can leave knowing I did my best and over the last 13 years I leave with much satisfaction and memories.”Robert J. SA expats can register abroad to vote

first_imgDirco: South African missions Registration weekends Provision has also been made for two special registration weekends to accommodate South Africans living abroad who are unable to register at their nearest South African foreign mission during normal working hours. The registration weekends will be held on 18 and 19 January, and on 25 and 26 January.Special votes Chapter 3 of the election regulations, dealing with special votes, has also been revised to accommodate voting by South African citizens abroad. It requires registered voters who will not be in South Africa on election day to notify the chief electoral officer of the IEC of their intention to apply to cast their ballot at a South African diplomatic mission. Notifications of intention to apply for a special vote are made online via the IEC’s website using a VEC10 form, which will only be available once President Jacob Zuma has proclaimed the election date. Online applications must be made with 15 days of the proclamation. 8 January 2014 The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (Dirco) have announced their collaboration to register South Africans living outside of the country as voters for the first time. This follows the presidential assent to the Electoral Amendment Act No 18 of 2013 and the publication of amendments to the Regulations on the Registration of Voters late last year. In the past, citizens could only vote if they had registered in South Africa. “The 2014 general election is a watershed for South Africa as it marks the 20th anniversary of our democracy. The IEC takes great pride in enabling all South Africans to exercise their democratic right to vote,” said Mosotho Moepya, the IEC’s chief electoral officer. How and where to register In terms of the amended regulations, South Africans living outside of the country who wish to vote in next year’s national election are required to register in person either in South Africa or at one of South Africa’s 124 embassies, high commissions or consulates-general located in 108 countries. These South Africans need to be in possession of a valid South African identity document (either a green bar-coded South African ID book, a new smart-card ID or a valid temporary identity certificate) and a valid South African passport to register. South African citizens living outside of the country and who are already registered as voters in South Africa do not need to register again. Applications for registration are open with immediate effect and take place during normal office hours of the various missions until 7 February. “South Africans living abroad are urged to confirm the working hours of their nearest foreign mission before attempting to apply for registration to avoid disappointment,” a statement from the IEC said.
